UNPROFESSIONAL RETORTS: MY OWN LISTSRecently, Rolling Stone magazine released their top 500 albums of all time. The people at Rolling Stone are no doubt much smarter than B, but that doesn't mean I agree with their picks. The top selections are hard to argue with. Beatles, Hendrix, Stones, etc are all correctly represented. However, after the top 20 or so it seems that RS decided to reward commercial success much more than critical success. We already know what sold well; the people at Billboard seem to have that covered. RS needs to focus on critical appeals; this is supposedly what they do best. Green Day's Dookie over Pearl Jam's Ten? Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill over Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville? Not possible. There may have been more angst-filled teens buying Alanis' album, but that doesn't make it better. In the spirit of lists, B is giving his readers his favorite top 10 albums of all time. Not necessarily the best, but his favorites. He is also going to list 10 albums that young obsessive listeners need to hear, along with 10 greatest hits packages (because shortcuts are necessary). B is of a new generation; the generation that throws their jewel cases away and grew up with rap on the radio. B's generation doesn't know song titles, only song numbers (“My favorite songs are one, four and seven”). Although B is obsessed with new music, he could take his 10 faves and 10 best-of discs and be happy for a long, long time. B's top 10 favorite albums
